The Planetary Magick System
May 12, 2008 – 8:45 pmThe Planetary Magick System
The planetary magick system appears in print in a number of places, and the Golden Dawn manual by Israel Regardie is quite a decent place to start. In the book you’ll find a number of correspondences, proper rituals, and correctly drawn sigils which should make contact with entities a snap. The system of correspondences is relatively easy to understand. Each planet has a number of objects which are considered sacred. If you create an atmosphere that is conducive to the nature of the planet, it is argued, then it makes it much easier for the entity to be contacted. This appears to be quite true from all experiences.
A minimum ritual should probably consist of:
1) Performance of the LBRP - including casting your protective circle
2) Surrounding the “altar” with the correct correspondences
3) Making contact with the entity
4) Proving that the entity is real and/or actually knows something
5) Performing the magickal purpose of the ceremony
6) Issuing a license to depart
7) Closing your circle and banishing
How you do each of these steps is a factor of your own genius. Although you can buy tons of books on the subject and look at long lists of correspondences, the primary factor to the success of your ritual is personal. Simply, the ritual must resonate with you. For this reason, ritual is almost always a matter of personal preference, and when you consider many of the magickal texts, keep in mind that they were written by a specific person in a specific time and will probably included many of their biases and filters. We’ve attempted to keep these biases to a mininum, and in constructing a minimalist ritual system, we hope that this powerful system will apply to a large number of people.
First, most of the rituals of the past are densely worded and aren’t clear about the mode of operation. For beginning magicians, it’s tough to imagine what’s actually expected. Indeed, the concepts of invocation and evocation can be completely misunderstood and this could result in a lack of early productivity. I’m here to tell you, don’t overcomplicate any of this. Your “contact” with these entities need not be dramatic. Indeed, if you’ve never developed any clairovoyant skills, then you’ll probably be hard pressed to “see” any entities on the physical plane. For this reason, I’ll introduce a quick shortcut that I’m sure can help you.
If you’ve never achieved any kind of success contacting entities, may I suggest you go ahead and purchase a “William Fuld Talking Board”. Yes, this simple board and pointer system is known as the amazing “Ouija” oracle and has amused children and adults for decades. I know it seems way to simple of a way to do business, but believe me, for someone inexperienced in “conjuring” it’s a fast and easy way to actually communicate with the entities, which, after all, is the main point of the exercise.
Now, I’m almost sure that some “real mages” won’t approve of this method, but I suggest we just ignore them. Sure, using a “Ouija board” is not as dramatic as experiencing open-eyed hallucinations (usually reserved for psychotics or people on hallucinogens), but it’s much easier to deal with easing into the process of communication anyways. In fact, could you really handle talking to a completely imaginary person who was coming to you in 3D including auditory hallucinations? If you answered yes to this question, you may already be nuts!
So, for beginners who haven’t had much success using other methods, give the William Fuld Talking Board a chance. If you’re already experience with “conversing with spirits” using other methods, then of course feel free to use them. At some point in the future, you’ll probably be able to evoke the spirits to visible appearance, but in the meantime you can rely on a simple device or a great imagination. The end result is the important part, not the means to get there.
Opening and closing the circle are always the correct way to do the ceremony. Invoke at the beginning and banish at the end. A simple one for one invocation and banishing is a good practice, as it won’t leave a lot of extra entities hanging out at your residence. Since the goal of this work is balance, maintaining a balanced approach to invoking and banishing is something you’ll want to get right from the very start
A system of personal development as old as the Stars
The Gods have always wanted mankind to succeed, and they cherish that wish to this day. For man to continue to evolve, the species will need to keep producing the types of advancements that have become more commonplace since the 1600s. Namely, advances in science and learning. Only with the continued striving for human excellence can any of our people hope to go the “next level.” Luckily, planetary magick holds just such a promise for practioners.
“By the seven planets as it were by instruments, all powers are diffused into man from the supreme fountain of good.”
Those words were written by Cornelius Henry Agrippa, one of the first to ever publish a cohesive system of planetary magick. This tome was written in 1510, and outlined the many uses of the system. Agrippa was quite thorough in his presentation, detailing a hierarchical system that included Angels, Archangels, Intelligences, and Spirits. He also included information on drawing sigils, derived from magic squares. The system is primarily an amalgam of Greek and Roman magick, culled from many classic texts which he had access to. The system was extremely complete, especially considering other works of that era. In fact, it’s safe to say that Agrippa’s “3 Books Of Occult Philosophy” are the seminal texts upon which all the later works, especially those of the Golden Dawn and Aleister Crowley are based.
Agrippa sought to train magicians with his book. He didn’t shy away from technical terms, and was as complete as could be expected in detailing his findings. Agrippa’s work was copied many times and over the years a number of mistakes became commonplace. In the last decades, the work has been corrected by Donald Tyson, as has the planetary information included in “The Golden Dawn” by Israel Regardie. You can safely use the sigils and magick squares, secure in the knowledge that the symbolism is now correct.
Why the sigils and squares have fascinated so many people, while the core philosophy has not done the same, is a matter of conjecture. But suffice it to say that Agrippa’s methods of drawing sigils, as well as the Golden Dawn approach to ritual ceremonies are used widely. However, the deeper philosophical truths are rarely discussed. One can assume that the emphasis is placed on “magick spells” over “personal development” as way to perhaps fool the uninitiated, or as a way to sell more books. But in reality, you can’t ignore the philosophy any more than you can ignore the fact that Nightime follows Day and Day follows Nightime. If these are universal principles, then any magick you would attempt must necessarily follow the same
arules.
One of the keys, as you’ll learn, is to allow the Intelligences of the Planet to discuss any philosophical question with you. Once you’ve done this consistently, you’ll notice a sublime consistency among the answers. The planets cannot live without each other, and you can’t live without their influences. Even people who are unaware of the workings of the Planets are still ruled by them. As more and more people lose sense of the inner harmony of the Universe, great imbalances threaten to destroy their quality of life. If you don’t learn any other lesson from these beings, you’ll learn that the natural state of mankind should be equilibrium.
